SLBF Affiliation

On Friday, 29th January South Warriors paid the affiliation fee of $150 ECD to the Saint Lucia Basketball Federation. A number of players have made contributions, and have, therefore, become members of the South Warriors team for 2010.

What remains now is the registration fee to participate in the upcoming tournaments for 2010. The fees at this point are as follows:
Premiere League – $200. 00
Division One (male) – $150
Females – Free

It appears that South Warriors will not participate in the Premiere League of 2010, though we still qualify at 8th place from last year’s tournament. Contributing factors are:

  • current composition of the team;
  • with Maze Sniperz basketball club participating this year a large subset of last year’s players have moved to this club leaving a crop of less experienced players to field from;
  • current interest level;

Thus, this will be a rebuilding year for South Warriors which will showcase younger talents as well as a few “hardbacks”.

Friendlies

Well it seems the league is not yet done with the Southern Warriors.

The Warriors have been selected to play a series of practice matches in preparation for the league playoffs in May. Already, they have played #4 Dennery Dolphins in Dennery on Monday, April 27th, a match which ended with the Warriors finally defeating a league team 88-77.

Next #3 Courts Jets will visit the Warriors on Thursday, April 30th. Match time is 7pm at the Vieux Fort Multi-purpose Court. In their previous encounter the Warriors lost to the Jets by their season’s largest margin of 17 points. Jet vs Warriors March 24th.

1.3.2
When a valid excuse has been provided to the Head Coach prior to the announced date and time for practice, it is then the decision of the Head Coach to allow this player to participate based on the selection rules indicated in 1.3.2.1 t0 1.3.2.4.

Warriors on a losing streak 0-3

After holding a lead for the first time in the Lime Hoops Classic, the Southern Warriors still came up short, falling to the Morne Fortune Gladiators in a thriller to the buzzer, 48-45.

This was a must win for the Warriors, who badly needed to end their losing streak before facing the more experienced teams in Courts Jets and VBCC Warlords. Now a wide open tournament has shifted to a “do or die” position for the Warriors as every match has become critical to make it to the playoffs and also to avoid relegation at the end of the season.

To the Warriors credit, Saturday showed a marked defensive improvement over previous games. The predominant zone defense was a lot more active leading to 32 Gladiator turnovers. The Warriors took care of the ball a lot better recording 16 turnovers, but the killer statistic was the field goal misses, 73 of 92 attempts!! The Warriors field goal percentage was an abysmal 21%. And the free throws, 6 of 22, 27%. Other glaring statistics were 26 offensive rebounds by the Warriors which should have lead to more second chance points and 20 steals which should have cashed in at least 10 or more transition baskets.

Luckily no one was left down at Barre De L’isle on this trip. The Warriors driver, Douglas, warned he would be taking matters into his hands if the Warriors shamed him in another match. But after Douglas seemed calmer than previous matches, perhaps placated by the improved scoring margin at the end of the quarters. The Warriors ended the first quarter behind, as usual, but by only four points. Quarters 2 and 3 were won by the Warriors, giving them the lead at the end of both intervals.

But again, the Warriors could not close out in the fourth quarter and their lack of structured offense reared its ugly head again making the points hard to come by. The Warriors scored a measly 8 points in the fourth quarter, but still that wasn’t what sealed the coffin. What did the Warriors in was their lack of focus on defense in the final two minutes. Perhaps a change in defensive tactic would have sufficed to maintain better coverage on the last two Gladiator baskets scored first by Noel on a backdoor dunk and Edward, who laced a dagger from the right baseline corner with approximately 3 seconds remaining. The last shot put up by Sham Hunt, on the pass from Jayant Quinlan, clanged badly off the front of the rim as the final whistle sounded.

Uniform front logo suggestion

The above image is a proposal to you guys for a front logo for the Southern Warriors yellow uniform. Please understand:

  1. The use of white against yellow was not my preferred choice, just what is available with the printing house. The type of printing used is a press-on which is much longer lasting. A very small amount of black is available at this point, however, there is more than enough white. White and black are the only press-on colours available.
  2. The cost of printing: Logo + small number beneath logo + small number on short, is $15 per uniform.
  3. Printing house is owned by Neil Phillip

I would really appreciate your comments/suggestions for this logo.

All players who have not paid their players fee of $20.00 are urged to do so by Friday in order to have these uniforms printed for the next match.

0-2 Now!!!

Southern Warriors succumb to the Babonneau Dynasty 55-49.

If the Southern Warriors are your favorite team please start googling for great season comeback stories now, because now they are 0-2 in an 8 game tournament. Yes, 8 games with the now confirmed ousting of the Sir Arthur Lewis team for not meeting tournament requirements. 9 teams now comprise the LIME Hoops Classic and the Warriors have lost two games that, on better days, they would have won comfortably.

But, hey, great stories come from humble beginnings and boy were the Warriors humble on the offensive end in the first quarter. They couldn’t buy a field goal finishing the quarter with 4 points on free throws alone. The Dynasty were having a field day against the Warriors’ man-to-man defense, getting the ball in deep which got Gillan “Bashment” Joseph in foul trouble early. A change to zone defense in the second quarter sparked a 17-9 run, bringing the Warriors within 8 to end the half 29-21.

After marginally winning the 3rd quarter to come within 6 points 45-39, a strong 4th quarter would have made for a better story for the Warriors, but then came a plague of turnovers. The Warriors finished with 25 turnovers, half of which may have occurred in the 4th quarter alone. The scoring in the 4th quarter ended 10-10, not enough to seal the come back for the Warriors.

There are no photos available for this game. My fault for wearing too many fancy hats. On that note we are inviting anyone interested in digital photography for the team to email our webmaster (webmaster@vieuxfortsports.org). This is not a paid position, only a social opportunity.

Only Warriors stats are available, a slip-up of the officiating team. They send their apologies.

LIME 2009 Hoops Classic

Well, the season has began and the Warriors know they are in for a fight.

The St. Lucia Basketball Federation (SLBF) Premier League, dubbed the LIME Hoops Classic, opened last Saturday at the Vigie Sports Complex, starting with a modest opening ceremony MC’d by Ms. Julie Bonnet of the National Basketball Officiating Committee. Speeches were delivered by SLBF President Mr. Anthony Lamontagne, Director of Youth and Sports Ms. Fortuna Belrose and LIME representative Mr. Terry Finisterre. The Royal St. Lucia Police Band regally marched the teams off the court, then the tournament began with the Warriors meeting the Soufriere Sulphur Stars in the first of two opening matches.

The Warriors were ill-prepared, and it showed. A few minutes into the game the team looked like a broken down vehicle with no decent car insurance – they were that lost. The Sulphur Stars out classed the Warriors in almost every statistic including field goal percentage (Sulphur Stars 41%, Warriors 21%), rebounding (39, 23) and turnovers (17,19).

The Warriors never lead, but remained within 10 points for the better part of the first 3 quarters, closing with 2 points at the end of the 3rd. But the coup-de-gras was served in the 4th where the Warriors could not buy a basket for at least 4 minutes, and the Sulphur Stars went on a run.

Sulphur Stars floor leader, Eugustus ‘Bara’ Jean, played a great game with a double-double including 14 points, 10 rebounds and 5 assists. Warriors captain, Gillan ‘Siton’ Joseph, also had a modest game with 13 points, 10 rebounds and 2 assists. Tim “Shepp Dogg” Baptiste scored a team high 14 points for the Warriors, with 7 steals and 3 rebounds.
